Kluane National Park - Part 2

The next morning we drove down to Kathleen Lake to further explore Kluane National Park (pronounced clue-AH-nay). We were hoping to do a vigorous hike to the King’s Throne Summit, a good 6-8 hour trek. However already when we pulled into the parking lot at the trail head, it was getting to be over cast and windy.

If it was windy down by the lake then there were certainly gale force winds up a the look out. A few times we were almost blown right off the trail! In weather conditions like this we decided against doing the second half of the hike from the lookout to the summit and carefully made our way back down the steep gravely track instead. On the way down, we ran into two other girls whom we had previously met on the Grizzly Lake Trail in Tombstone and a hiking guide and her tour group that we had seen the day before at Sheep Creek. Small world up here.

Trying not to be blown off the mountain

So windy!

After our hike we drove the remaining 200 km back into Whitehorse. Our Yukon circuit completed. From here on until San Diego we’ll be primarily heading southwards.

After resupplying at the superstore in Whitehorse and filling up on decently priced gas ($1.19/L), we drove out of town to the Wolf Creek Campground to sleep for the night.
