The Road to Skagway

The road down into Skagway offered one of the most scenic drives on this trip so far. At Carcross, there were plenty of road side attractions including Emerald Lake and Carcross Desert, one of the world’s smallest deserts.

The historic downtown of Carcross is one of the stops for the world famous White Pass Railway. In fact, we were lucky enough to be able to watch the train come into town. Like many towns in the Yukon, Carcross has its roots in the Gold Rush and today its main economy is tourism. May historic buildings have been restored and re-purposed into tourist venues.

From Carcross it was a windy downhill ride over White Pass to the American boarder. The steep road offered some amazing views and lots of turn outs to take pictures.

Our third border crossing into America turned tragic when our two delicious bell peppers were seized! Had we known they were fugitives from the law, we would never have bought them at the superstore the night before. We were assured that they would be hastily frozen and then incinerated but perhaps the boarder office thought they’d go well with his dinner.
